Gingerbread men

Who doesn't love Christmas?

Sel's ex-classmate from secondary school (and as a side-note, aren't your old friends sometimes the best? They're seen you at your best, and worst! Ah, those angst-filled teenage years...) asked if we could make 20 gingerbread men for her colleagues, since she wanted to give them away as Christmas presents. It was such a lovely idea that we were eager to help!

This was the first time we made them, but we think they turned out ok! And the recipients were happy with their presents. We liked the contrast of the spicier ginger taste with the sugary icing, and of course the cheerful cookies looked so happy.. well, until we started munching on them, of course ;)

Cheery Chocolate Cupcakes

Our colleague wanted to surprise her boyfriend with a birthday party (we'll post pics of the Superman cake at a later date!), and requested us to make some cupcakes for everyone to eat too, using M&Ms too, since they're a favoured snack of his.

We were at the party too, and thought that the chocolate cupcakes turned out pretty well! This recipe is going to be a keeper; it's moist, produces fluffy yet satisfying cupcakes and isn't too sweet. It also has a strong chocolate flavour, probably helped by the higher levels of cocoa powder we used. All in all, it was a happy event - and the birthday boy was pleasantly surprised!

What we made:
  • Dark Chocolate Cupcakes
  • Decorated with Buttercream and M&Ms

Grace and John's Wedding

Grace and John's wedding was a really memorable event.

It marks our first foray into baking for weddings and our first baking collaboration.

Grace was our ex-colleague and a fellow baker. She wanted to bake her own desserts for her wedding party at the Rider's Cafe but needed some help. So Sel and Wei happily volunteered to take care of the wedding cake and some other cupcakes. What are colleagues for, right? And Sel had to-die-for carrot cake recipe that we can't get enough of, so Grace decided that would be the treat for her important guests at the wedding.

And phew, luckily we were used to working under pressure and tight deadlines (we work in the creative industry!). Creating the cakes from start to finish, to the point of presenting it onto the dessert line was an eye-opening experience for us both. We learnt that while every detail has to be planned, and that things never quite go as planned! But of course, it turned out all well and rustic-ally perfect, amidst the warm and fuzzy country-style interior of the restaurant. See it for yourself in the pictures.
